Below is the PDF of our presentation (which we will present next week).

I spent hours putting this together… I hope you like it.

So, how’s your French? :)

This video shows Françoise Reynaud, the curator of Eugène Atget’s exhibition at Musée Carnavalet (that happened earlier this year and I really really wish it was still on when I was in Paris!), talking about the photographer, his style, importance, amongst other things.

It’s very interesting and informative. The only problem is it’s in French lol

And below is another video, this time in English (yay!), from John Szarkowski – who was the Director of the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art in New York for nearly 30 years.

Enjoy!

My visit to Rue Mouffetard (yep, that’s right!!)

So in an unexpected turn of events, I found myself in Paris (for a photography workshop with Trey Ratcliff and Miss Aniela, which I was lucky to receive a scholarship for!), and so I decided to try to squeeze in a quick visit to Rue Mouffetard, to see what was there today!

The photograph was originally taken where Rue Mouffetard meets Rue l’Arbalète, in the 5th Arrondissement.

I went there on a Saturday afternoon, and it was very lively and non-touristy, which was refreshing.
There was a market nearby and many little shops on the street selling all sorts of yummy-looking things!

As Trey Ratcliff is all about HDR, I started to give it a go. And below is my “emulation” of Atget’s photo:

I took a print out of the image with me so I could try to replicate the composition, angle, etc, as much as I could. I’ve also cropped it to match Atget’s.

As you can see, today the establishment is a restaurant, and some of the features of the building have changed, while others remained the same over time.

I was disappointed, however, that I missed an exhibition of his work, which happened earlier this year. It would have been perfect!!

Although I tried to find somewhere to see his work, it seems like the vast majority of it resides in MoMA, New York. Absolute shame! (Surely they should split it and give Paris some of it back?)

Anyway, I’m very happy that I had the privileged opportunity to go there now! Perfect timing! 🙂

Initial Research

Below are some of what I found both in The Photo Book by Phaidon and Art Photography Now by Susan Bright.

I was very happy to see, of all images, it was the Rue Mouffetard that was featured on the first book 🙂

Welcome!

Hello all, and welcome to our blog! 🙂

We were given the image below as a starting point for our project. It’s called Cabaret Rue Mouffetard (1900), by Eugène Atget.

Over the course of the next few weeks we shall include in this blog any research that will help us construct our presentation and research statement. So, please, keep tuned! 😉
